WAKE UP- JAMES MARRIOTT REVIEW BY SAMINA PARVEEN
James Marriott is back with another earworm song ‘ Wake Up’ released on 2nd July 2021. With this song, James has carved a niche in this competitive internet world. The commentary king of Youtube has left no stones unturned to improve and thus has made a long way since his first song ‘Slow Down’. We are extremely proud of this journey.
Overall the song was quite wholesome. From a catchy tune and impressive lyrics to a music video that complements the song’s aesthetics.
The lyrics of the song were quite appealing and well written. Influence’s music is often devoid of meaning, that’s not the case here. Lyrics are a little open-ended and give readers a chance to perceive them in a way that suits them. I was really struck by these lines for they had a much deeper meaning attached to them. Somewhere the lyrics had a personal touch to them which definitely added volume to it.
“People are trying to change me
I keep having dreams where I hurt them
I can’t find the key that unchains me
Maybe I’ll find it in your hand ”
In my opinion, the lyrics begin with a journey to find oneself and eventually accelerates, by this line the narrator is tired of losing themselves and wants to get out of this situation. The key that unchains can refer to multiple aspects like freeing the mind from anxious thoughts or feelings that hollow one’s mind. People who are trying to manipulate the narrator have caged his feelings and he’s on a journey to find himself back.
The tune is catchy and get’s stuck in your head, much like his previous songs. However, I feel there is more scope for improvement in the vocals.
Coming to the most interesting and well-crafted part, the music video. The costume was simple yet good-looking. James confidently moving the mic in aggression stole the thunder. It was complimentary to the lyrics which were accelerating to find freedom and the urge to find freedom.
Some metaphorical scenes like breaking the clock, looking in the mirror gave the audience chills. Killing the time to rediscover oneself is a crucial meaning to look upon. We are often so tangled in our daily lives that we forget to find ourselves again, living basically for someone else. The scene with three versions of himself was building on to the meaning. Exploring the personalities or sides one person can have.
I really enjoyed the song and would recommend anyone to include it in their daily playlists. Supporting such artists can help a lot.
